What it’s like to be a ‘glass child’
  + stars: | 2024-04-23 | by ( Taylor Nicioli | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +11 min
Meneses Maples refers to herself as an adult “glass child,” the sibling of a person with a mental or physical disability. How does a glass child disappear? It is important not to assume what the needs of a glass child are, said Missud, the New York psychotherapist. More than a decade after her TEDx presentation, Meneses Maples receives messages from parents of glass children seeking her advice. Meneses Maples said she hopes to inspire research on glass children by spreading the word through presentations and workshops.

Alpha capture strategies take inputs from sources like human traders, market data, sell-side research, and more and then use a systematic process to create a portfolio that is efficiently sized and hedged. CenterBook uses trading data from dozens of external firms to create its portfolios, while Norias will create its book off the ideas of its fundamental analysts. Meanwhile, Man Group is building out an alpha capture team within its AHL unit's special strategies team, a recent job posting states, and Squarepoint is doubling its team, finding external managers for its buy-side alpha capture program. "It is a way for them to increase their capacity and take in more assets," said Kevin Lyons, senior investment manager at Abrdn, about the largest platforms growing their internal alpha capture capabilities. Living with a disability isn't awfulMany people think living with a disability is a fate worse than death. And yet, while I have challenges, I also have a pretty great life, that's typical in a lot of ways. Yes, Hannah does most of the physical upkeep of my life (although I can help move heavy boxes better than you'd think). Caregiving builds intimacyA lot of people think Hannah's life revolves around caring for me 24/7. Our relationship looks different to what people are used to, so people feel entitled to comment on it.

However, last week's mind-boggling rally following the Federal Reserve's decision to forgo another rate hike caught many investors by surprise. The trade structure I am going to use here is called a “bear put spread” also known as a “put debit spread”. All I need is for SPY to drop by $1 by expiration date for this trade to double my money. I was wondering if you could help us average investors interpret technical analysis versus fundamentals when they do not align. Technical analysts focus on stock charts — looking at momentum, relative strength indicators, volatility, and other indicators that are often referred to as the "technical setup." All this leads us to the question of what to do when the technical setup and fundamental setup don't align. As noted, we will buy a stock when our positive fundamental view is in contrast with a negative technical setup, but we would never buy a stock on which we have a negative fundamental view regardless of the technical setup. I was wondering if you could help us average investors interpret technical analysis versus fundamentals when they do not align.

Gold retreats as growth risks drive safe-haven bids to U.S. dollar
  + stars: | 2023-09-05 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +2 min
Gold slipped to a one-week low on Tuesday on rising bond yields and as investors opted for the U.S. dollar to hedge against global growth concerns. Spot gold declined 0.6% to $1,926.49 per ounce. Jitters about global growth, particularly in China and the Euro zone, caused rival safe-haven dollar to hit multi-month highs against a basket of currencies, making gold more expensive for overseas buyers. "The global growth slowdown story will eventually prove to be a positive for gold and that would only come once the market becomes more skeptical about the US recession risks." Silver shed 1.1% to $23.70 per ounce, logging its biggest daily drop in a month.

Their experience raises broader questions around other high-cost gene therapies coming to market, sometimes after accelerated regulatory approvals, drug pricing experts said. Gene therapies work by replacing genes – the body's blueprint for its development. The gene Zolgensma delivers instructs the body to make a protein vital for muscle control. If gene therapies do fall short, it becomes harder to justify prices that researchers have argued are already poor value. More recently, the first hemophilia gene therapy approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration was priced by CSL Behring at $3.5 million; 26 more gene therapies are in late-stage development, according to IQVIA.

Investors have pinned their hopes on Leqembi as sales of multiple sclerosis drug Tecfidera take a hit from cheaper generic rivals while spinal muscular atrophy drug Spinraza faces rival treatments by Novartis (NOVN.S) and Roche (ROG.S). "Biogen's business is in transition," said CEO Christopher Viehbacher, who was hired in November to help power up growth and put behind a series of setbacks for older Alzheimer's drug Aduhelm. Multiple sclerosis treatments Avonex and Vumerity, as well as SMA therapy Spinraza, beat analyst estimates, while Tecfidera missed expectation as it faced generic rivals. "We see no unexpected surprises in Q2 results, allowing investors to focus on Alzheimer's," said Wells Fargo analyst Mohit Bansal.
